Samia Kerakra

What will be your most valuable contribution to your TechWomen mentorship?

I hope my most valuable contribution to the TechWomen mentorship experience will be sharing my expertise in polymer engineering and sustainable solutions to plastics pollution. I bring a unique perspective from working in Algeria, where plastic pollution is a critical environmental challenge, and I am actively leading research to develop safe, practical solutions. I am eager to exchange knowledge on environmental technology and innovation, collaborate on problem-solving and offer insights into how sustainable practices can be implemented in developing contexts. My goal is to contribute meaningfully to discussions and support collaborative learning with mentors and peers.

The Top Three Things I Would Like to Learn or Experience During my Mentorship

  1. Leadership skills in green technology.
  2. Advanced methods for plastic pollution reduction.
  3. Networking with environmental science experts.

Mentorship Characteristic

  • Identify workshops or certificate programs to further my learning after the program has ended
  • Focus on leadership skills building
  • Focus on technical skills building

Ideal Company Type

My ideal mentor would work in a company focused on biopolymer extraction and development, with multiple specialized research and development units dedicated to experimental assessment and innovation. The company would emphasize sustainable production of biofilms and other biodegradable materials, adapting their products to various applications. It would foster a collaborative, research-driven culture that values scientific rigor, innovation and practical solutions for environmental challenges. The organization would be mid to large-sized, with strong capabilities in both laboratory research and scalable manufacturing.

What are three adjectives that best describe you in the work place?

  1. Innovative
  2. Curious
  3. Research-driven

What impact will your mentorship have on your career and professional path?

I hope the 15-day mentorship will enhance my leadership skills in green technology and provide hands-on insights into innovative approaches for biodegradable polymer development. Engaging with a U.S.-based mentor will expand my professional network, expose me to advanced research methodologies and offer practical guidance on scaling sustainable solutions. This experience will empower me to drive impactful environmental projects in Algeria, advancing my career as a researcher dedicated to reducing plastics pollution and toxicity in my community.

After participating in the TechWomen program, how will you leverage your mentorship experience to make an impact in your home country?

After the TechWomen program, I will leverage my mentorship experience to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution, especially among communities and farmers who use plastics in agriculture. I plan to lead educational initiatives to promote sustainable practices and reduce plastic waste. My primary goal is to launch a successful startup focused on developing eco-friendly alternatives and solutions to plastic pollution in Algeria, driving both environmental and change in my community.
