TechWomen 2014: Week One Scrapbook

Throughout the past week, 78 Emerging Leaders from 16 program countries in Africa and the Middle East arrived in the United States to begin project-based mentorships at innovative host companies in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The first week of the 2014 program has already been filled great moments, stories, and connections.

The first week of TW2014 began with neighborhood overviews in San Francisco and Mountain View to help the Emerging Leaders learn more about their new home for the next month. On Thursday, the TechWomen gathered at Symantec for the Emerging Leader Orientation, where company leadership Antoine Andrews, Director of Global Diversity and Inclusion, and Sheila Jordan, Chief Information Officer, spoke with Emerging Leaders on the company’s commitment to women in STEM. In addition, Sheila Casey, Deputy Director at the Office of Citizen Exchanges for the Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs spoke with ELs about the history and development of the TechWomen program, and how each cohort enriches the brilliant network of women leaders around the world.

The next day, Emerging Leaders took part in a Design Thinking Workshop at Citrix. Encouraged to “think outside the box,” this unique and energizing workshop was led by Leon Segal of Innovationship. Finally, Emerging Leaders enjoyed a city tour of San Francisco on Saturday, and ended the day with a welcome party, generously hosted by TechWomen Mentor alumnae Anar Simpson.
