The Top Three Things I Would Like to Learn or Experience During my Mentorship

  1. Learn modern and affordable healthcare technologies for resource limited settings and understand their applications in daily healthcare delivery to increase efficiency.
  2. Improve my leadership skills and learn about various strategies on becoming a good mentor to my mentees upon my return.
  3. Network well and learn about different cultures from other like-minded professionals.

Ideal Company Type

An ideal company for me would be an international health service delivery company which has an immense focus on public health and child health services. The company should also have vast experience in working in a Sub-Saharan African setting especially in resource limited areas. I'd like for the company to also be research oriented.

Certifications

  • Pediatric Nutrition, Boston University School of Medicine
  • Epilepsy Assessment and Management Course, Pretola Global Health and Consulting Limited
  • Clinical Care for Sexual Assault Survivors, Rainbo Initiative
  • Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment plus Admission Care for sick children (ETAT+)
  • Mass Casualty Training, King's Sierra Leone Partnership
  • Control and Prevention of Ebola Virus Disease Training, Chinese CDC
  • Good Clinal Practice, FHI360

Additional Technical Skills

I had the opportunity to learn vaginal delivery, various surgical (minor surgery under supervision and assist in major surgical procedures). I acquired research skills during my posting at Connaught Hospital and also at Kambia Government Hospital. My leaderships skills became more evident when I started working at Kambia Government Hospital and noticed the burden of herbal intoxication in children due to cultural beliefs, knowledge gap and poverty.

What are three adjectives that best describe you in the work place?

  1. Compassionate
  2. Empathetic
  3. Reliable

What impact will your mentorship have on your career and professional path?

I expect my mentorship to positively impact my work capacity as I'm willing to learn as much as possible from experience and lessons from my mentors. I expect the mentorship to enhance me to get clearer vision of my career and how to navigate through my professional path to achieve my desired goal. I'm sure the mentorship program will equip with the necessary knowledge and skill sets required to be good mentor.

After participating in the TechWomen program, how will you leverage your mentorship experience to make an impact in your home country?

Currently my country has knowledge and human resource gaps generally, but especially in the health sector. We also have very limited female interest in STEM related fields. After participating in the TechWomen program, I look forward to return and implement all what I have learnt. I'm also interested in sharing knowledge gained by training and mentoring students and staff, especially for women and girls. I would also want to serve as a role model to female students and encourage their participation and interest in STEM.
